On Thursday, June 15th eighth graders will participate in the MMS Promotion Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. in the Mustang quad. Students must report back to MMS by 3:30 pm. The ceremony will last approximately one hour. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. and seating will be on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Unless a person is physically sitting in a chair, it will be considered an "open" seat.

Students will be dismissed at 12:00 noon. Our Promotion Ceremony begins at 4:00 p.m.

The Moreland Middle School Symphonic Band & Orchestra earned a “Unanimous Superior” rating at the California Music Educator’s Association (CMEA) Bay Section South Band & Orchestra Festival at Santa Teresa High School on Friday, March 31, 2017.

Led by music teacher Greg Bergantz, Moreland Middle School’s band and orchestra ensembles performed in front of a public audience while being adjudicated and scored by three performance judges and a sight reading judge. Recorded comments from the judges included, “If I was listening with my eyes closed, I’d swear this was a very good high school band.”

On April 13th, the Debate and Dialogue class took a field trip to the Santa Clara County Superior Court. Having studied Courtroom procedures, the class was excited to present their own mock trial in the courtroom of Judge Deborah Ryan. In the morning, students were able to observe a trial in action. Then, in the afternoon, they presented their own trial. Rujula Rao served as judge. Ishann Iyler and Valeriia Pak were the prosecuting attorneys; Krystle Catamura and Natalie Fisher were the defense lawyers. The four witnesses were: Elliot Kampmeier, Matthew Pendo, Meenakshi Mittal and Haley Stringer. All of the other students were engaged as jury members or court personnel. The class traveled on buses and light rail provided free of charge by VTA.

On March 18th, MMS 8th graders, Rujula Rao and Ishaan Iyer participated in the Optimist Speech Contest. This year's topic was "What the World Gains from Optimism." Rujula was awarded first place and fifty dollars and Ishaan Iyer was second place. MMS 7th grader, Priyanshu Sharma was awarded the third place medal. Both Rujula and Ishaan advanced to the county finals on April 1st. As the only middle school students competing aganist all high school finalists, Rujula and Ishaan were once again victorious! This time Ishaan was awarded first place and Rujula placed second. Both have now qualified for the state finals and the chance to win $2,500 for first place. We wish our outstanding speakers all the best as they compete in the state finals in Sacramento on April 23rd.

All MMS students are taking the CAASPP assessment during the window of April 17th - May 5th. It is especially important for students to be at school the entire day during this time. Please do not schedule any appointments or vacations during this time. Please make sure your child is at school on time each day.

Our Honor Roll Field Trip is coming! Students who earned Honor Roll during the 1st or 2nd quarter are eligible to attend. We will be walking to Saratoga Six to see "Smurfs - The Lost Village." Permission slips are available in the office and will need to be turned into the office by Thursday, March 30th. The movie dates are: April 10th - 6th grade, April 11th - 7th grade, and April 12th - 8th grade. Students will leave MMS at 9:15 and return to MMS at noon.
