Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) is a nationally recognized academic support program and a yearlong elective at Moreland Middle School. While AVID does have a focus on college and career readiness, at the middle school level, the focus will be more on high-school preparedness. AVID works on writing, inquiry, and collaboration with support and extensions on notetaking, goal setting, team building, study and time management skills, personal organization, self-advocacy, public speaking skills, and much more.
Students also receive tutorial support in AVID classes, where they work together with tutors for additional academic support. Each trimester, AVID students will have enrichment opportunities to visit high schools and neighboring universities, hear from different college and career speakers about their academic journeys, and participate in artistic and cultural experiences. To join, students will need to complete an application and interview. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA and have a self-starter attitude and growth mindset.
