Welcome to the 24-25 School Year

July 30, 2024

Dear Moreland Middle School Community,

It is our privilege to welcome you to the 2024-25 school year! Your teachers, administrators, and all other staff are so excited to see you. Believe it or not, the first day of school is around the corner. For those of you whose children have attended MMS in the past, we are so glad to have you returning. And for those of you who are new to MMS, we are pleased to have you as part of our school community! Please take a few minutes to read this letter carefully as it contains important information that will ensure a smooth start to the school year.

In the 2024-25 school year, our middle school will be implementing AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies school-wide. AVID focuses on fostering academic success for all students by promoting critical thinking, organization, and collaboration skills. We look forward to enhancing our students' learning experiences and preparing them for future achievements.

One focus this year will be organization. As students move from elementary to middle school it is important that they learn how to organize their materials and time as we help them develop independence. In order to support this critical skill, all Moreland Middle School students will be using a 2 inch binder that will be provided to them on the first day of school. The set-up and organization of this binder will be explained throughout the first week of school. When purchasing your child’s backpack, please keep in mind that your child’s backpack will need to be large enough to carry both the 2 inch binder and their school issued chromebook.

If you wish to get a head start on school supplies, please see below or use this link (MMS 2024-25 Supply List) to view our MMS supply list. Please keep in mind that teachers might share more specific items needed for their classroom at the beginning of the school year.

(EC 35183) Administrative discretion applies for all dress code rules.

Minimum Attire Standards

Student attire must permit the student to participate in learning without posing a risk to the health or safety of any student or school district personnel.

  • Students must wear clothing, including a shirt with pants or skirt, or the equivalent (for example dresses, leggings, or shorts).

  • Clothing with holes (ripped jeans) must cover all areas outlined (see diagram).

  • Hats and hoods are permitted outside.

  • Clothing must cover the chest and a majority of the lower torso (see diagram). Strapless items of clothing are not permitted; tops must have some type of straps over both shoulders.

  • Clothing must cover undergarments including sports bras and bralettes. Pants or skirts must sit at hip level. Visible waistbands or straps on undergarments worn under other clothing are not a violation.

  • Clothing covering the chest and lower torso must not be see-through.

  • Blankets and stuffed animals are not included in our attire standards and should remain at home.

  • Gang-related apparel is prohibited.

  • Clothing must not have offensive images or language, including profanity, hate speech, pornography, or depicting or advocating violence or the use of alcohol or drugs.

Possession of Electronic Devices and Cell Phones

Students may be in possession of electronic devices and cell phones, providing that these devices do not disrupt the educational program or school activities. All electronic devices shall remain off and away during the instructional day and at any other time as directed by a school employee. The  instructional day is defined as 8:00 am through the end of the last period of the day. Students  may use cell phones before and after school and during school-related events, provided they are not disruptive to the event.

Additional Information:

  • The taking or transmitting of pictures or videos on a phone is strictly prohibited at any time during the school day.

  • No student shall be prohibited from possessing or using an electronic device that is determined by a licensed physician or surgeon to be essential for the student's health and  the use of which is limited to health-related purposes. (Education Code 48901.5)

  • If students prefer, they are welcome to check-in their phones at the office upon arrival and may pick them up immediately at the end of the school day.

  • Students may not use headphones/AirPods/Beats, Bluetooth devices, or cell phones during the school day. The only exception is if a student uses the headphones and/or cell phone for educational purposes under their teacher’s direct supervision and permission.

  • Please carefully consider the monetary value of cell phones before sending them to school with students. Students who bring electronic devices to school do so at their own risk. The school and/or district is not responsible for lost or stolen electronics.

In the event that a student must get in contact with a parent or guardian, he/she should ask the teacher to use the classroom phone or go to the main office to make the call rather than using his/her cell phone.
